64 PROFESSIONAL PILOT May 2017 Photos by Mike Potts Image courtesy Honeywell Carey Miller of Universal Avionics moderated the seminar on avionics updates during the opening day of the conference Steve Creamer dir of ICAOs Air Navigation Bureau based in Montreal Canada delivered the keynote address at IOCs opening session Tony Marlow general manager of Castle Cook HNL Honolulu HI was among many FBO operators in attendance at IOC Coca Cola Sr Capt Jordan Francis spoke about requirements for operating over the North Atlantic Dupont Aviation Chief Pilot Craig Hanlon introduced speakers in the opening session and was part of the regional review on Central America Mexico and the Caribbean Dave Malloy Nav specialist with the FAA discussed regulatory and operational standards in international and oceanic flight cation between controller and pilot that is gaining increasing use both in domestic and international airspace The global proliferation of technology was clearly illustrated by the observation that CPDLC once rare in the Americas and Europe is now available throughout most of Africa The question of whether to self handle or to use trip planning and coordinating personnel for destinations outside the US was also discussed extensively Continuously changing regulations and unstable political environments were just 2 reasons cited for the employment of outside experts to handle the details of international travel particularly in locations where flightcrews may not have recent local experience Throughout the conference the agenda worked its way around the world with discussions on the specifics of various regions This began Monday with South and Central America Mexico the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday included China Russia and the Stans Southeast Asia and the Pacific This was followed by India the Middle East and Africa on Wednesday and finally Europe on Thursday Interspersed were presentations about overflight considerations for locations that are unfavorable for landing along with strategies to avoid them Other presentations covered more general subjects including flightcrew medical fitness and related liability managing technology in the cabin and on the flightdeck and avionics upgrades and updates The 2018 edition of NBAAs IOC is slated for March 26 29 in Las Vegas Approach design criteria Comparison RNP AR Obstacles will be assessed within 2 X RNP NM from either side of course May include a constant radius turn RF leg anywhere in the procedure RNAV GPS Obstacles will be assessed within 3 X RNP NM from either side of course Conventional including LPV Obstacles will be assessed with a trapezoidal containment region Latest design criteria enables more precise landing with RNP AR with no compromise to safety Shorter flight paths such as the example depicted in the graph can also help to save fuel At the Chairmans reception were Ana Martin of Líder Aviação Nancy Pierce of Jeppesen and Cynthia Oliveira also with Líder
